Quick, tell me the difference between poverty capitalism and social entrepreneurship. Have not heard of poverty capitalism, then read this opinion piece from The New York Times, "The Expanding World of Poverty Capitalism". NYT approved for-profit services provided to the poor are probably social entrepreneurship. When the NYT does not approve, the services are poverty capitalism.
The NYT article discusses how the accused and convicted are receiving court mandated services from government appointed companies. In certain cases these companies reportedly behave like collection agencies and charge high fees. Certain of these services are provided for under the Constitution, which the NYT believes should result in free services. This breakdown in constitutional rights is brought on by the governments need to outsource to the private sector due to budget limitations.
As government budget issues become more pressing, we will see increased privatization of public services in order to take advantage of private sector efficiency. One result of such changes will be that constitutional safeguards may be ignored in the interest of fiscal responsibility. Of course we do not have to worry about constitutional protections because we do not break the law. Wonder if they could pass a law that stipulates minimum levels of economic efficiency or water efficiency or ....
