Several of my boating friends sent me reminders that today is Coast Guard Day. The U.S. Coast Guard was founded in 1790 by an act of law initiated by Alexander Hamilton. It's founding pre-dated the U.S. Navy by approximately ten years. Today the Coast Guard has primary responsibility for law enforcement, environmental protection and search and rescue along the coastal waters of the U.S. The Coast Guard was the first on the scene federal government response to the earthquake in Haiti, hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill. The Coast Guard station at Miami Beach is the most active search and rescue location in the U.S., handling over 700 cases per year.
I have been involved with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for about seven years. The Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that is actively recruiting new members. If you are interested to support the U.S. military, enjoy boating or are just looking for a worthwhile community service opportunity, let me know.
