Today I met the President of Honduras, Porfirio "Pepe" Lobo. He was speaking at an event sponsored by the Center for Hemispheric Policy at the University of Miami. His 30 minute speech covered his plans for Honduras and the principles that guide him. He stressed democracy, economic development and education.
Listening to him reminded me of the speeches Republican presidential candidates gave when I was a child. Non-controversial, simple to understand ideas that everybody could accept. Why the U.S. is now focused on controversial ideas that small ideological minorities care about is beyond me. This trend probably started under Clinton, blossomed under Bush and is now thriving under Obama. Maybe I should just move to Honduras or New Zealand or ...
